Protective cover for edges of stairs?

From what you describe you want theres only 2 things I can think of. One is a metal stair nosing that nails on ,made usually to cover the end of vinyls. It has some "grippers " on the top to aide in traction. The other would be a rubber stair tread , but that I think will distract from the redwood.
