Australian opinions on race, racism, culture, identity of white and non white australians?

Recently it has become evident to me that we can be so racist towards each other as well as foreigners and it scares me that we are going backwards as a nation, not forwards. I am feeling that Australia has all of a sudden become a racist country or have i just realised that we are? What are other Aussie peoples views on this? im talking all australians, not just white australians. Im concerned that my asian australian fiance and myself (white) will be looked down upon for 'selecting each other' when we dont feel we have done anything wrong. Im sick of the looks i get or the snide remarks i think i hear and wonder if im being paranoid with the media focus on racism at the moment or if its the underbelly of australia I havent seen before. What are peoples thoughts in the 2010 climate in relation to the crap the media is selling us?
