Technically, FMA and FMA Brotherhood are two completely different series'. The movie that comes after the original FMA finishes off the plot, to make one complete story. However, the mangaka hadn't finished writing FMA when the series was going on, so about halfway through, the studio made up their own series that fit. Brotherhood is true to the original plot, and makes a completely different story.
